Étrange Métronome – Strange Metronome

A composition on the piano not compatible with a metronome click…

« Strange metronome » is a strange name for a song absolutely not fixed on a tempo. Philippe Goirand composed it about ten years ago, an instrumental piece just on the piano, different from his usual pop songs. But how to play it, record it when digital audio workstations required following a « click »? From the first unsuccessful attempt remains only the name : « Strange metronome ». Since then, DAWs like Logic Pro have become capable of deducing tempo variations after recording, giving real freedom of interpretation to the instrumentalist. Virtual instruments have also progressed in piano sound modeling as well as in playability (here the Modarrt Pianoteq with a model of Petrof Mistral piano). And the strange metronome came true.

Étrange nom qu’« Étrange métronome » pour une composition absolument pas calée sur un tempo. Philippe Goirand a composé il y a une dizaine d’année cet instrumental au piano, différent de ses chansons pop habituelles. Mais comment le jouer, l’enregistrer alors que les stations de travail audionumériques imposaient de suivre un « clic » ? Du premier essai infructueux ne reste que le nom : « Étrange métronome ». Depuis, les STAN comme Logic Pro est devenue capable de déduire après enregistrement les variations de tempo, donnant une vraie liberté d’interprétation à l’instrumentiste. Les instruments virtuels modélisant le piano ont aussi progressé sur le plan sonore ainsi qu’en jouabilité (ici le Modarrt Pianoteq avec un modèle de piano Petrof Mistral). Et l’étrange métronome est devenu réalité.
